Faith Milestone Ministry
Spiritual Growth & Christian Parenting
Faith Milestones are Chapel of the Cross’s commitment to developing faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. We partner with parents and guardians to provide tools, education, and celebrations that help children and teens grow their faith at every age. We believe parents are the primary teachers of the faith in the home—our milestones are designed to equip you for this vital calling.
Early Milestones
The early milestones feature events designed to encourage and equip parents in the calling of Christian parenting. Each milestone concludes with a celebration and the presentation of a special gift during a worship service.
Middle Milestones
The middle milestones invite parents and children to participate together, providing parents with tools for faith formation while engaging children more directly in the learning process. These milestones also culminate in a celebration and gift presentation during worship.
Later Milestones & Confirmation
As students enter the confirmation program in 6th grade, they begin to take greater ownership of their faith journey. Parents continue to be supported through trainings that equip them to teach and model the faith, while students are offered new opportunities to live out their faith beyond the home. In this stage, some worship celebrations will focus specifically on the child’s personal commitment and ownership of their faith.

Rite of Baptism
Age: Infant/Any
The first step in one’s faith walk. God invites us into His family through the waters of Holy Baptism, where He freely offers the promises of the Holy Spirit and salvation through His son Jesus Christ.
Each child will receive a baptismal certificate with their baptismal information, a candle to light on their baptismal birthday, and a white cloth. Each baptism should be accompanied by pastoral care.
If you are interested in having your child baptized at Chapel of the Cross, please call the church office (636-928-5885).

Establishing the Faith
Age: 0-2
The Parent Training focus is on creating a culture in the home through the use of parent-led rituals; prayers, songs, books, visuals, etc. as well as establishing an environment of love, safety, and care at home. Regular attendance in worship and availability of childcare during Bible study is explored. The family is presented with a wooden cross that can be decorated by the child and hung in a prominent place.

Learning the Faith
Age: Preschool
The Parent Training focus is on the importance of intergenerational worship, encouragement through the difficulties of small children in worship, and some best practices for making the most of it together! The parents present their child with a canvas drawstring bag and a few worship aid items. Children can personalize this bag and families are encouraged to set it aside and use it (and the items inside) exclusively for church.

Speaking the Faith
Age: K-1
Parents and children gather for a meal, fellowship, and learning about prayer. After the meal is served, families will practice some simple ways to pray together. The following Sunday, they will present their child a prayer book for use at home.

Discovering the Faith
Age: Grades 2-3
The Parent Training focus is on the power of God’s Word and encourages them to sit with the children, teach them to find passages and read them. Parents are given a Bible and have time to mark, highlight, etc. to personalize it for their kids. Then parents present the Bible to their kids.
This milestone also includes a family experience called Explode Your Bible. Focusing on the power of God’s Word and the basics of navigating the Bible (book/chapter/verse, genre, etc.). It introduces children to the features of the Faith Alive Bible and encourages them to explore and read the passages. Families are given a 30 Day Bible Reading Plan to work through together as they begin to build the habit of reading God’s Word.

Exploring the Faith
Age: Grades 4-5
Parents and children gather for a meal, fellowship, and a time of learning; about the importance of building spiritual habits. After the meal is served, families will be given an outline for devotional habits as well as some examples of self-reflection based on what they read in scripture. Then parents and children will split, allowing time for parents to discuss obstacles their children may face during this phase in their faith journey while the children will be given time to practice a time of independent reflection. The following Sunday, the parents will present their child with a journal for use at home.

Serving in Faith
Age: Grades 6-7
As a part of our VBS program students who are entering into 6th or 7th grade have the opportunity to participate in this service team. Over the course of the week the students will have the opportunity to complete a service project at 5 different locations. The students learn what it means to serve in various capacities both in the church and in the community.

First Communion
Age: Grade 8
On Maundy Thursday students are invited to the Lord’s Supper for the 1st time. Prior to this experience students have been taught what it means to participate in this holy meal.

Rite of Confirmation
Age: Grade 9
During the Rite of Confirmation, students re-affirm the faith that was given to them in their baptism. Students are prepared for this over the course of 3 years as they receive instruction on the Six Chief parts of the Catechism, the Bible, and other important aspects of the Christian faith.
If you or your child are not yet confirmed in the Lutheran Church we welcome you to speak with a pastor to discuss our Confirmation process.

Witnessing the Faith
Age: Grades 9-12
Held every non-youth gathering summer; this experience is open to all high schoolers, providing them with an opportunity to serve together as a community of God’s people. During this time they will be encouraged to share their faith, as they learn what it means to put their faith into action.

Youth Gathering
Age: Grades 9-12
Held once every 3 years in different cities across the country the LCMS brings together 20,000+ youth and adults. This experience is open to all high schoolers, providing them with an opportunity to come together as a community of God’s people to be encouraged in their walk with Jesus Christ, grow in their faith, and learn about their Christian identity.

Deepening the Faith
Age: Grades 10-11
Parents and youth gather for a shared meal before separating for their own unique training experiences. Parents will explore the faith and developmental phases of 10th and 11th graders, gaining tools for setting healthy boundaries, navigating difficult conversations, and supporting their teen’s growth in freedom in Christ. Youth will have time to ask honest questions, explore what they believe, and connect faith to real life, purpose, and their own freedom in Christ. Together, the event creates space for growth as families navigate this important season of faith formation.

Living By Faith
Age: Grade 12
The Parent Training focus is on releasing your emerging adult child into the world and learning to influence their faith from a distance. It contains practical advice for encouraging them through questions and support as they create vision for the future. Graduates receive a bath towel with their name and a baptismal Biblical reference embroidered onto it. Graduates also have a separate time for discussion and encouragement with another facilitator.
